What is in the colour Partridge???
« Thread Started on Nov 27, 2006, 1:25pm »

I am learning how to breed silkies and have been told that progeny of a Partridge roo or hen can throw all colours???? Can someone enlighten me on this? So white roo x white hen = white chicks....how about white roo x black hen or blue hen or splash hen???? Its just that I have a white roo whom I love to bits for his gentle and quiet nature...wondering if his offspring will all end up being only white. Any advice will be much appreciated! ;)

I'm not into breeding.. but I think the roo is the dominant color carrier to your chicks...

Here is a link for a genetics site but what I would do is to find some local breeders and talk to them. The partridge variety is prominant in many different breeds and any of the breeders should be able to help you. http://home.ezweb.com.au/~kazballea/genetics/

no the rooster does not determine the colour of the babies. it depends upon the genes that both the parents are carrying and how they combine together.
the link to kazbella's site given above should help. it can get very complex.
in its most basic form, there is a gene that comes from each parent which goes towards each quality.
for example, if each parent is a white bird,
they will each give a white factor. two white factors will mean that the offspring will be white.

where it can start to get a bit more complicated is that some colours are stronger or dominant than others (called recessive). in silkies, white is usually a recessive colour, so if you breed a black bird with a white bird, there will be black factor, plus a white factor. the black factor is dominant and so the bird will look black, but also carry a white factor, so if it is bred again to a white bird, it is possible to get a white bird. however, it can get even more confusing, because depending on teh other genetic properties of both birds, you may get other colours from this cross if you don't have just pure white or pure black parent birds :'( ::) :P :P :P oh yes.....it takes time to come to grips but its worth it! >:(

HA!...when I was raising rabbits..I had some Holland Lops....and bred an unmatched pair..doe was black and buck was orange and white.
and one of the bunnies was a black angora....
but neither parent was an angora...
it was in the genes somewhere...
she was a cutie...a Holland Lop angora...
fascinating what will come up....

I thought it came from the buck because he was very fluffy...and the doe had a smooth coat.
but no angoras came up when I bred him with other does...
so it must have been the black doe, or both had angora in the genes,
as a recessive gene...
